Three Common Root Canal Myths

Illustration of four step root canal therapy

While a root canal might not be something to look forward to, it should not be something to dread. And once you’ve had one, the result should certainly make you smile! In this blog post, we will dispel three common myths that give this important restorative procedure a bad reputation.

Myth #1: Root Canals Are Painful

One of the biggest rumors floating around about root canals is that they are excruciatingly painful procedures. While that was once the case, you now have modern technology to thank for a virtually pain-free procedure. And one that will succeed in saving your tooth! Our dentists use local anesthesia to numb the area and can use sedation if necessary. But root canals are routine procedures and, from the patient’s perspective, don’t differ greatly from getting a filling.

Myth #2: Root Canals Have Been Linked to Cancer

Sometimes misinformation can spread like wildfire. That’s what happened with this myth, which stems from just one questionable study that was performed all the way back in the 1920s. Although the findings that linked root canals and cancer were eventually proven to be unfounded, the rumors had legs.

Myth #3: Root Canals Are Temporary

You may have heard that getting a root canal means you’ll have to be back in the dentist’s chair every few years to have it repaired or replaced. That’s just not true! The goal of the procedure is to eradicate all infection so that it can’t grow back, and that goal is almost always achieved.
