How To Care for Baby Teeth

Baby teeth, like childhood, are only temporary. Children lose all of their baby teeth by the time they’re twelve years old. But just because these teeth don’t last very long doesn’t mean it’s not important to take care of them. In fact, it’s crucial to take care of your child’s baby teeth to make sure their mouths and jaws are prepared to welcome their adult teeth as they gradually emerge!

Caring for Baby Teeth in Infants

When your baby is very young, you can clean their teeth and gums with a washcloth. It’s also okay to let them chew on it to help clean their teeth themselves. You can then graduate to an infant toothbrush and toothbrush, being mindful to clean your baby’s teeth after feedings.

Caring for Baby Teeth in Toddlers

When your child is around two years old, it’s time to teach them how to spit while brushing. You should still brush your teeth for them, or at least assist them, but at this point they should start getting used to the idea of holding the toothbrush themselves. When their teeth start to grow next to each other, it’s time to teach them to floss!

Healthy Diet Equals Healthier Teeth

It is important to also provide your child with a nutritious diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals and low in carbohydrates and sugar in order to prevent cavities and decay.

When To Take Your Child to the Dentist

You should take your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday. Our team at Middletown Commons Family Dental will be able to monitor the progression of their baby teeth, including how everything is growing in, and if they are developing any cavities.
